This seasonal movement stresses underground sewer laterals and causes joint separations in older terracotta and cast iron pipes. When joints open, soil infiltrates the line and creates partial blockages where organic waste accumulates. Bacteria break down this waste and produce hydrogen sulfide, which you smell as rotten egg odor coming from floor drains or toilets. The high humidity across the Triangle also accelerates biofilm growth inside drain lines, especially in homes with slow-flowing drains.
